County Meath is situated in the east of Ireland and is also known as 'The Royal County'. It covers an area of 2,342 kmē. Although only lightly visited by tourists, the county is rich with passionate history and legend. The county capital Navan is located right near the river Boyne. Another important city is Trim, housing the circuit court, the Norman Castle and the Anglo-Norman Parliament. In county Meath one can find the most impressive Stone Age tomb in Europe. Newgrange is the most famous of all Irish prehistoric sites and UNESCO World Heritage. It is older than Stonehenge and reaches a height of 36 feet. The entrance is marked by a ten-ton stone, which is ornately carved. County Meath also houses the beautiful Hill of Tara, a long limestone ridge running between Navan and Dunshaughlin. Containing a number of ancient monuments it is worthwhile a visit.
